Migraine and CBD oil

1. CBD – characteristics

Cannabinoids are all-natural compounds found in hemp. These compounds act mainly on type 1 and type 2 cannabinoid receptors, showing characteristic properties – including antidepressant, analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as stimulating intestinal peristalsis. Cannabidiol (CBD) is found primarily in hemp plants. However, it has no psychoactive properties.

2. What is migraine?

Migraine is called primary headache, and its symptoms usually include severe, recurring headaches. Symptoms accompanying migraines are often nausea, vomiting, or hypersensitivity to external stimuli such as light or sound. A migraine attack usually lasts from 4 to 72 hours. Although a lot of people struggle with migraine (the number is estimated at up to 15% of the worlds population), to this day, it is not known what the causes of its occurrence are.

3. Study – CBD and migraine

The mechanism of the anti-migraine action of cannabinoids is to inhibit the release of serotonin, as well as to stabilise platelets during migraine attacks. CBD has properties that can positively affect the relief of migraine symptoms. They include analgesic, antiemetic and anti-inflammatory effects. It is thanks to them that people with migraines more and more often decide to use CBD oils.

In 2016, Rhyne and colleagues conducted a study in Colorado to evaluate the effects of CBD use on primary headaches. People who participated in the study used cannabis. Among the people participating in the study, 103 patients (85.1%) reported a decrease in the incidence of migraine; in 15 patients no changes were noticed; in 3 patients the incidence of symptoms increased.
