1. Probiotics – basic information
Probiotics are live microorganisms, the consumption of which in the right amounts can have a positive effect on the health of our body. A probiotic product must meet the basic criteria: maintain the viability and activity in the digestive tract, come from a natural, healthy microflora and be resistant to the acidic pH of gastric juice, bile and digestive enzymes. The probiotic should have clinically proven beneficial effects on the body. The microorganisms with a probiotic effect include mainly lactic acid producing bacteria of the genus Lactobacillus [1] [2] [3].
2. Effect of probiotics on the body
Probiotics exert a number of beneficial effects on the body:
- Have a positive effect on the intestinal transit time;
- Ensure the proper development of the microflora inhabiting the body;
- Lower the pH of the intestinal contents as a result of the production of lactic acid and short-chain fatty acids;
- Alleviate the negative effects of antibiotics;
- Strengthen the immune system;
- Affect the regulation of inflammation.
It is worth noting that the probiotic properties of bacteria are strain-dependent – a given strain will have a different effect than other strains, characteristic only for it. For this reason, it is worth getting acquainted with the properties of a specific strain and providing the body with definitely more than one strain of probiotic bacteria.
3. Natural sources of probiotics
Probiotics should be delivered to the body in the most natural way possible together with food such as:
- Dairy products – yogurt, milk, kefir;
- Pickles – sauerkraut, pickled cucumbers, beetroot leaven, kvass;
- Soy products – tempeh, soy sauce or tofu.tofu.
